Warning Signs at Each Stage

1Before Application

Unsolicited loan offers via SMS, WhatsApp, or social media

High Risk

Legitimate lenders don't randomly message people offering loans. They advertise through official channels.

App not on official Play Store or App Store

Critical Risk

Scammers use direct APK downloads to avoid Google's security checks.

No verifiable company information

High Risk

Real lenders have CAC registration, CBN license, and physical addresses you can verify.

Promises of guaranteed approval

Medium Risk

No legitimate lender can guarantee approval without assessing your creditworthiness.

2During Application

Requests for upfront fees or 'processing charges'

Critical Risk

Real lenders deduct fees from loan amount or add to repayment. They never ask for money before disbursement.

Asks for ATM PIN, token, or OTP

Critical Risk

Legitimate lenders only need your account number for disbursement. They never need your PIN or OTP.

Excessive permission requests (contacts, gallery, SMS)

High Risk

While some apps need basic permissions, accessing your photos, SMS, and all contacts is a red flag.

No clear terms and conditions displayed

Medium Risk

Legal lenders must show interest rates, fees, and terms before you agree.

3After Approval

Loan amount different from what was approved

High Risk

Scammers approve one amount but disburse less, then charge interest on the original.

Hidden fees appearing at disbursement

High Risk

All fees should be disclosed upfront, not deducted as a surprise from your loan.

Interest rates above 30% monthly

High Risk

While rates vary, anything above 30% monthly is predatory and likely illegal.

Threats of contact harassment during collections

Medium Risk

CBN regulations prohibit lenders from contacting your family, friends, or employer for collections.

Common Scam Tactics & How to Avoid Them

The 'Processing Fee' Scam

Scammer approves your loan, then asks for a small fee (₦2,000-₦5,000) to 'process' or 'activate' it. After payment, they disappear or ask for more fees.

Your Defense:Never pay anything before receiving your loan. Legitimate lenders deduct fees from the disbursed amount.

The 'Bank Upgrade' Scam

Scammer claims your bank account needs upgrading to receive the loan. They request your BVN, account details, and OTP to 'upgrade' your account.

Your Defense:Your bank handles account upgrades directly. No lender needs your OTP or PIN. Visit your bank branch instead.

The 'Insurance' Requirement

After loan approval, scammer demands you pay for 'loan insurance' or 'guarantee fee' before disbursement.

Your Defense:While some loans have insurance, it's deducted from loan amount or added to repayment, never paid upfront.

The Impersonation Scam

Scammer creates fake website or WhatsApp account mimicking real banks (GTBank, Access, etc.) and offers loans with 'special rates'.

Your Defense:Contact banks through official numbers on their website. Banks don't give loans via WhatsApp.

The 'Clearance' Scam

Scammer says your loan is approved but 'stuck' due to CBN or CRB issues. They request a fee to 'clear' the block.

Your Defense:No one can 'clear' CBN or credit bureau issues with payment. These are legitimate checks that take time.

The Data Harvesting Scam

App collects your BVN, contacts, photos, and personal data but never actually offers loans. Your data is sold or used for identity theft.

Your Defense:Only download apps from official stores. Check reviews and ratings before installing.
