Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my money back if I was scammed?

It depends on how quickly you act and the payment method used. Bank transfers within 48 hours have the best chance of reversal. Card payments can be disputed within 120 days. Cash or cryptocurrency are almost never recoverable.

What if the scammer is threatening to contact my friends and family?

Document the threats (screenshot everything). This is extortion, which is a serious crime. Report to the Police Cybercrime Unit. Do NOT pay to stop the harassment - it often makes it worse. Alert your contacts that scammers may impersonate you.

The scammer has my BVN. Am I in danger?

Your BVN alone cannot be used to withdraw money, but it can be used for identity verification in scams. Monitor all your bank accounts, enable alerts, and consider contacting NIBSS to flag your BVN for enhanced verification.

Should I pay if they threaten to post my information online?

No. Paying rarely stops the harassment. Scammers often continue extorting victims who pay. Instead, document the threats and report to authorities. If intimate images are involved, report to the Police Cybercrime Unit - this is a specific offense under Nigerian law.

Can I sue the loan app?

If the app is a legitimate company operating illegally (e.g., predatory practices, illegal data use), you can file a complaint with CBN and potentially a civil suit. If it's a complete scam operation, civil action is usually not practical as the operators are anonymous.
